NEED TO KNOW

  • Lucy Letby’s parents slammed Netflix’s new documentary, The Investigation of Lucy Letby, in a statement on Feb. 1
  • Susan and John Letby called the doc “a complete invasion of privacy” and asked why Netflix did not “have the decency to tell” them they were using footage of their home
  • Letby was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others while she was a nurse

The parents of Lucy Letby will not be watching the new Netflix documentary about the convicted murderer, describing it as “a complete invasion of privacy.”

The Investigation of Lucy Letby arrives on the streamer on Wednesday, Feb. 4, promising viewers “unseen footage and unheard insider accounts” into the case of the British neonatal nurse, who was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others.

Lucy’s parents, Susan and John Letby, alleged to The Guardian that they were not informed that some of the unseen footage featured in the forthcoming program, produced by ITN Productions, shows their longtime home.

“The previous programs made about Lucy, including Panorama and the almost nightly news showing her being brought out handcuffed in a blue tracksuit, are heartbreaking for us,” the former nurse’s parents said in a statement to the British outlet on Sunday, Feb. 1. “However, this Netflix documentary is on another level.”

“We will not watch it,” Susan and John continued of The Investigation of Lucy Letby, adding, “It would likely kill us if we did.”

Lucy’s parents also criticized the inclusion of videos of their residence without their knowledge in the doc. They told The Guardian they “had no idea they were using footage in our house.”

The couple also addressed a specific bit of footage of the former nurse, in which they said she is seen “being arrested in her bedroom in our house and her saying goodbye to one of her beloved cats.”

The clip, teased in the trailer for the Netflix documentary, is “even more distressing,” Susan and John said in their statement.

“Heaven knows how much more they have to show. All this taking place in the home where we have lived for 40 years,” they added to The Guardian, explaining that their house is located “in a small cul-de-sac in a small town where everyone knows everyone.”

“It is a complete invasion of privacy, of which we would have known nothing if Lucy’s barrister had not told us,” added the parents.

Susan and John also questioned, “Why is Paul Hughes [an investigating officer in Letby’s case], with whom we always cooperated fully, allowed to show the world what took place in our house that morning and Netflix not even have the decency to tell us?”

Reps for Netflix and ITN Productions did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Feb. 1.
