Kyle MacLachlan is ready to let the world see a different side of him.
PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the cover of the veteran actor's upcoming memoir, Fictional Selves, which is being released by Crown Publishing on Oct. 6. MacLachlan, 67, is telling his story in his own words, while also looking back at his iconic roles in projects including Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Sex and the City.
The book's official synopsis promises readers a "funny, moving and playfully self-aware" look inside the Golden Globe-winning actor's storied Hollywood career, which spans more than 40 years. Fictional Selves is "a book of doppelgängers, with MacLachlan mirrored by his own prodding ego ('Other Kyle'), the iconic characters he has inhabited and the ones that eluded his grasp but gave him a profound and surprising lens onto himself as a person and a performer."
MacLachlan tells PEOPLE why he chose this moment to share his story. "It suddenly hit me that I’d been working in film and TV for over 40 years and it really hit home while working on my podcast having conversations with young creatives," he explains. "It’s brought a perspective and the book is an opportunity to reflect on my different selves over the years."

The actor adds that "it’s clear that the role I’ll most likely be remembered for is Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks," but he wants fans to know that's "only half the story."
As for "Other Kyle," the Twin Peaks alum teases his alter ego "is more judgmental, I would say. He’s a tough critic! Also, I never know when he’s going to show up!"
His memoir will chart his career from being discovered on the Seattle theater scene to starring in the $40 million 1984 blockbuster flop Dune to his lifelong friendship with director David Lynch and thriving TV career, which has included roles in a diverse range of series including Desperate Housewives, Fallout and Portlandia, among others.
Additionally, Fictional Selves "offers profound insights into his work with Laura Dern, Dennis Hopper, Anthony Hopkins and many more." Featuring "lessons learned the hard way about ambition, love and fatherhood" the memoir "is an honest look into the remarkable—and often unpredictable—life of an enduring and endearing Hollywood icon."

As for MacLachlan, he hopes readers will see a bit of themselves reflected back to them via his personal story. "I think the lessons we learn from other people’s life journeys can help smooth over our own insecurities; maybe help us all realize we’re not that much different from each other," he says.
But at the core of the Emmy-nominated star's story is the truth that every person leads more than one life. He explains, "I’ve tried to be as honest about where I was at any given moment in the timeline of my life. I’ve tried to tell the story in as entertaining a way possible. How many different lives you can live inside this life."
