Balloon pants are the new up-and-coming trend you need to keep your eyes on.
Case in point: On August 13, Julia Roberts, 58, was spotted in the cuffed puddle-proof bottoms while walking around New York City. Meanwhile, just a few months earlier, Kate Hudson, 47, showed off a snazzy pair in some cool Instagram pictures.
My mom and I also both wore them while bopping around Italy and France since they didn’t drag on the European streets or in airplane bathrooms, giving stock to that age-old phrase — two’s a coincidence, three (or four, in this case) is a pattern. And below, you can join us in this trend with similar pairs starting at $20.

Grace Karin High-Waist Paperbag Pants, $30 with coupon

$40 $30 at Amazon
These now-$30 pants have more than 14,000 five-star ratings to back them up. They have a slimmer fit than some of the other options we found, plus the clever paperbag silhouette that Oprah is also fond of. Bonus: The bottoms are “perfect for a work outfit” and “are flattering and comfortable in the right areas,” enthused one Amazon shopper.
Halara Breezeful High-Waisted Ruched Pants

$40 at Halara.com
These “breezy and cooling” Halara bottoms have slits on the sides, so they have the breathability of shorts but with slightly more coverage. They’re moisture-wicking and quick-drying, too, so if you experience end-of-summer sweat or an early fall rain shower, you won’t feel uncomfortable the whole time you’re wearing them. Oh, and since the ties aren’t pre-fastened, you can adjust the length of the pants to your liking.
“I wore it to a graduation with the legs untied and heels; after the ceremony I slipped on sneakers and tied the legs. The transition from dressy to casual was great,” said one Halara reviewer.
Free People Lotus Drawstring Wide-Leg Jeans

$128 at Nordstrom
Unsure about balloon pants? These Free People jeans are an approachable way to get your feet wet (but not literally!) or, at the very least, try the trend with a staple you’re likely to reach for many times.
Thanks to the ties at the hems, you can cuff them up and wear them like Hudson’s balloon pants or — and a big or — you can wear them undone like a normal pair of wide-leg jeans. In other words, you’re basically getting two pairs instead of one.
Ahead, shop more balloon pants, including picks from H&M and Anthropologie, with prices as little as $20.
