Jon M. Chu is sharing the first adorable clip of his new baby girl!
On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Wicked director, 45, posted a video on his Instagram Stories of his baby daughter, and fifth child, in the hospital shortly after she was born. Her arrival came the same day as the Los Angeles premiere of the hotly anticipated movie, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
“I can’t believe this happened while the movie is premiering,” Chu wrote in a message over the video. “Magic is in the air.”
“Happy Premiere Day!! Welcome to our world, you’re gonna do great. You have a lot of witches on your side 💚🫧,” he concluded.
In the clip, Chu’s wife Kristen Hodge lay in a hospital bed with their baby girl asleep on her chest. Both were covered with a blanket as Hodge gently rocked the couple’s new arrival. Danny Wright’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” played over the top of the footage.
Their newborn daughter gripped Hodges’ finger and at one point in the video appeared to give a little yawn before putting her mouth around her mom’s hand.
During the L.A. premiere on Saturday, Nov. 9, a video was shared on the movie screen showing Chu filmed at the hospital giving a speech explaining why he couldn’t attend.
“I’m so sorry I can’t be there,” he began in the clip. “It’s November 9th. I was at the hotel across the street ready to come.”
“…I’ve waited for three years to have this moment to share a movie with you, but I’ve waited my whole life to have this moment to have a fifth child right now,” the Wicked director continued. “Of course, this little girl knows when to show up on premiere day.”
“Anyway, I wish I could be there, but here I am,” Chu concluded as he thanked the cast, crew and fans of Wicked.
Earlier in the day, Chu shared on his Instagram Stories that he had “a change of plans” at “about 4:00 a.m. this morning,” and that he would be missing the Wicked premiere in L.A. as he and his wife welcomed their fifth child, a baby girl.
“This movie has always moved in mysterious ways,” Chu penned as he posted a photo of a black-and-green friendship bracelet that read “Defy Gravity” on a table in a hospital room.
“Today is a day I’ve been dreaming about for a long time. Two babies (a movie and a little girl) all at one time and I truly couldn’t be happier I won’t be able to be at the Wicked Premiere tonight with all of you,” he continued.
