John Green has a new book on the way.
On Oct. 22, publisher Crash Course Books, a new imprint of Penguin Young Readers, announced the forthcoming publication of a new nonfiction book by the bestselling author. Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection is set to be published in spring 2025.
Per a statement shared with PEOPLE, the new book details the experiences of a young tuberculous patient named Henry, who Green first met in 2019 while traveling with the nonprofit organization, Partners in Health. In the years to follow, Green, a staunch advocate for addressing healthcare inequities, became vocal about access to treatment for tuberculosis around the world. Per the World Health Organization, the infectious illness, which largely affects the lungs, killed 1.3 million people in 2022.
Everything Is Tuberculosis builds on Green’s activism, and interweaves Henry’s story with the disease’s scientific and social histories, as well as its global impact. The book aims to be a resource that “humanizes and gives hope” to the “ongoing struggle” to address the diseasen, per the book’s description.
“This book is the culmination of a long journey toward trying to understand how a disease that has been curable since the 1950s continues to kill over a million people every year,” Green says in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be publishing it as the first title from Crash Course Books, and so grateful to all the TB researchers and survivors whose generosity with me made it possible for me to tell this story.”
Everything Is Tuberculosis marks Green’s second nonfiction book, following his 2021 bestseller The Anthropocene Reviewed; the author is also known for young adult fiction including the novels The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns. Everything is Tuberculous is the inaugural book to be published by Crash Course Books, an extension of the YouTube channel of the same name, founded by Green and his brother, Hank.
“Whether writing fiction or nonfiction, John Green has a gift for bringing truth to storytelling, and storytelling to truth,” says Green’s editor, Julie Strauss-Gabel, in a statement. “Confronting and inspiring, in Everything Is Tuberculosis John distills centuries of history and science though one essential human story.”
“This same craft sits at the heart of the landmark educational media brand Hank and John Green have been building together for more than a decade, guided by the principle that we learn best when we go beyond the facts to truly understand why those facts matter,” Strauss-Gabel adds. “It’s an honor to become a part of that mission with Crash Course Books.”
