Sometimes staying in and watching Jeopardy! is what the heart wants!
Actor and media personality Stephen Fry, 67, says that there is a very reasonable explanation as to why he and his 36-year-old husband, Elliot Spencer, are rarely seen in public. And their private hangouts even led to his most recent gig as the host of the new U.K. version of Jeopardy! on ITV.
During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show on Friday, March 21, Fry defended his highly private relationship, per the Daily Mail. Fry, who lives in Los Angeles, said that he told a U.S.-based agent once that he and Spencer, who haven’t been publicly photographed together in nearly six years, “don’t go to Hollywood parties much.”
He said he told the agent, “We have an early supper, watch Jeopardy! and go to bed.” At the time, there was no new version of Jeopardy! airing in the U.K.
Fry recounted to Ross that just weeks later, he was called by the same agent about the opportunity to host a U.K. reboot of the classic American quiz show. He said the agent called and told him, “ITV London is thrilled you’re going to do Jeopardy!“

Fry and Spencer married in 2015 after meeting three years prior in 2012 at a mutual friend’s party. At the time, the A Bit of Fry & Laurie star told Ross that it was love at first sight.
“We met at a friend’s house and I knew pretty much straight away that this was someone I wanted to spend, what I considered, the rest of my life with,” he said. The pair wed in an intimate ceremony in Dereham, Norfolk, in the U.K. just two weeks after Fry proposed to the writer.

In 2018, Fry was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He wrote on social media at the time, “This was quite an aggressive little bugger. As far as we know, it’s all been got. … I won’t know for sure until my PSA levels are checked. They should be 0 now because I have no prostate. But if there is anything left on the bed of the prostate, then I’ll need radiotherapy and the whole damn process will start again.”
In January 2025, the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.
