Brazilian auto influencer Ricardo Godoi died at age 45 during an extensive procedure to get a full back tattoo.
The Instagram star — who had over 220,000 followers at the time of his death — reportedly hired a tattoo studio to ink his body. The team opted to carry out the tattoo in a full hospital setting in the Santa Catarina state of Brazil, and Godoi was sedated with a general anesthetic.
Ahead of the procedure, he told his social media fans that he would return to posting that afternoon. Godoi was on the operating table when he went into cardiac arrest on Monday, Jan. 20. According to an Instagram post announcing his death, he died at 12 p.m. that day.
Police are said to be investigating Godoi’s death.
In a statement obtained by Daily Mail, the tattoo studio’s owner claimed that Godoi went into cardiac arrest “at the beginning of the sedation and intubation,” before they were able to start the inking process.
“He was quickly checked and a cardiologist was called in to try to revive him, unfortunately without success,” the owner continued, per the outlet. The tattooist also said he “deeply regrets” Godoi’s tragic death and called him a “great friend.”
Godoi — who was married, per his Instagram bio — regularly posted content about luxury cars. He also acted as CEO of his own business, Godoi Premium Group.
The update shared on his page stated that information about his wake and burial would be released soon.
“In this moment of pain, we sympathize with family and friends, wishing strength and comfort to go through this irreparable loss,” read the post. “May the memory of Ricardo Godoi be remembered with affection and respect by everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.”
The caption continued in Portuguese, “His joy, generosity and light will continue to be present in our memories and every story he helped build.”
