When my friend told me she had landed her dream job, I was naturally excited for her — and her closet. After five years of working from home, she’s transitioning to an in-office position and wants to look cute while feeling comfy doing so. Since I’m obsessed with fashion, I raised my hand to help her curate her wardrobe with timeless pieces that work in any season.

Since my friend hasn’t worked in an office in years, we had some editing to do before the fun of shopping began. The first to go were tops and dresses with busy patterns, since she wants to focus on fewer pieces that can build multiple outfits. We also eliminated anything too tight — like bodycon dresses or pencil skirts with no stretch — to make her hour-long commute from New Jersey to Manhattan more comfortable.
Instead, I suggested breathable styles, like this linen maxi skirt that a shopper called “comfy, classic, and so easy to wear” and an Oxford shirt made of lightweight cotton. I love that she can layer a sweater over the collared shirt in the fall and winter, too.

I’ve been wearing these pants on repeat all summer, so they were my first recommendation. With a faux zipper and pleats, they look dressy, but the stretchy waistband makes them as comfy as pajamas. Even better, Nicole Chavez, who has dressed stars like Bell, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Rachel Bilson, included them in her fall edit with Quince.

When updating a closet, I focus on pieces that can be worn in many ways, like these casual-Friday-approved straight-leg jeans and a relaxed button-down that one fan called “perfect” because it “drapes beautifully” and isn’t see-through. Chavez also included this top in her Quince collaboration, and it’s easy to see why. It looks refined, but not fussy, thanks to the relaxed fit, and can be worn with jeans, trousers, or skirts. One shopper who has trouble with buttons because of arthritis said it is easy to manage. Even better, they loved the top so much they bought it in two colors.
Best Quince Bags and Shoes
Bags and shoes are the icing on top of any good capsule wardrobe. Since my friend will commute on public transit, she’ll need a quality work bag like this one that can fit her laptop, water bottle, and more. New to Quince’s site, this convertible backpack is genius for carrying the essentials hands-free. For shoes, I sold her on these ballet flats that will keep her ankles exposed, creating a leg-lengthening effect on her petite frame.
