A Pennsylvania man died in a freak car accident, which his educator wife and their toddler son survived, while traveling in Maryland.
Raymond Craft was driving a Subaru Forester on a Maryland highway on the evening of July 27 when another vehicle struck a deer, causing the animal “to be thrown airborne through the windshield” of his SUV, per a Garrett County Sheriff’s Office news release about the incident.
“The Subaru then traveled off the westbound shoulder, over an embankment, and struck a tree head-on,” the sheriff’s office added.
Paramedics declared Raymond, 33, dead at the scene. His front-seat passenger, wife Cara Craft, was airlifted to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for her serious injuries, while their 2-year-old son, Anthony, was transported to Garrett Regional Medical Center for his minor injuries.
“His sudden absence leaves a void that can’t be filled,” Joseph Kane, who is Cara’s uncle, wrote in a GoFundMe he set up to support the family.

Cara, a beloved music teacher at Whitehall High School in Whitehall Township, “sustained severe, life-altering injuries,” Kane explained.
She “has already undergone multiple surgeries to stabilize her and faces a very difficult recovery,” he continued. “Cara requires ongoing surgeries, intense physical therapy and medical care to survive and rebuild her life.”
One of Cara’s students, Meili Chen, shared a heartfelt message for her teacher during an interview with local news outlet WFMZ.
“I just want her to know that we’re always going to be there for her, no matter what, as a community,” Chen said. “I want her to see how much we love her, how much she’s cherished and how much she’s been impacting everyone’s life in Whitehall.”
Kane, who has signed off on updates as “Uncle Joe,” also provided insight on how Anthony is doing after the accident.

In an Aug. 14 update on GoFundMe, Kane revealed that Cara has left J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, “where she received excellent ICU care,” and moved to a rehab center closer to her Center Valley home in Pennsylvania.
“She has made good progress as she begins the next phase of her recovery,” he wrote. “Cara and Anthony were also reunited — and little Anthony is medicine for his mom.”
Kane continued, “Following rehab, Cara will be spending some additional time recovering with her family. While the future path of recovery is challenging, Cara is a very strong and determined woman.”
