David Bromstad reflected on his sobriety journey while celebrating his birthday.
The HGTV star showed off how he celebrated his 53rd birthday in an Instagram post on Saturday, Aug. 22. He included an emotional caption, in which he praised sobriety for giving him the “life I was always meant to live.”
“Another trip around the sun and the gratitude is enormous,” Bromstad, whose birthday was on Aug. 17, wrote. “It’s been an incredible year of building, reflection, authentic connections, celebration and pure magic. The blessing and gifts I’ve received this year is beyond comprehension.”
“Sobriety has brought the most yummy life I was always meant to live,” he continued. “Feels great being 53 and loving every part and version of myself. The friends I have cultivated because of that clarity has been authentically delicious.”

The post included photos and videos of his vacation in Provincetown, Mass., with a few friends.
The carousel began with a snap of Bromstad and two friends in front of a body of water, followed by a video of himself blowing out candles. There were also photos of a birthday balloon, a bike excursion, his birthday cake and a colorful bouquet of flowers.
Bromstad previously opened up about “using substances” and checking himself into a treatment “program” in the HGTV special, My Lottery Dream House: David’s Happy Ending. The December 2025 program followed him as he transformed his Florida house into his dream home.
At the time, he said the special documented “the biggest moment of my life.”

“When I said this is the biggest moment of my life, it really didn’t have anything to do with the house. It had me talking about what this whole process was about and that’s about my mental health and it’s about my drug addiction,” the TV personality said on Instagram Live.
“It was about moving through it, but also not hiding it, which I did the first time I got sober,” he added.
In December 2025, Bromstad told TV Insider that it was important for him to be candid about his struggles.
“It was important for me to open up about the reality of my life,” he told the outlet. “I have a very blessed and incredible life, and I do know this. But it doesn’t negate the fact that I’ve had really hard times in my existence. I only allowed people to see the bright and shiny parts of me because that was all I was willing to accept from myself.”
Bromstad first spoke about sobriety in a 2023 Instagram post, writing, “Feels good to be present, sober and living the life I was intended to live.”
