NEED TO KNOW

  • Several Taylor Farms dips sold at Target were recalled due to jalapeños contaminated with salmonella from a supplier in Sinaloa, Mexico
  • Additional recalled products were sold at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Walmart, Hannaford, and Kroger
  • Taylor Farms was previously linked to a Cyclospora outbreak in salad mixes and berries this summer

Several types of guacamole, salsa and dips sold at Target have been recalled following the distribution of jalapeño peppers contaminated with Salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.

Taylor Farms’ Taco Dip (recalled in Florida, Ohio, and Texas), Mango Pico De Gallo (recalled for Ohio and Texas), Spicy Guacamole (also recalled for Ohio and Texas), Pico de Gallo, and Authentic Guacamole (both only recalled in Texas) have all been recalled for potential Salmonella contamination, Taylor Farms’ recall announcement, published on the FDA’s website, reads. The recalled items from Target have expiration dates listed between Aug. 7 and Aug. 14.

The jalapeño contamination occurred on the premises of a farm supplier in Sinaloa, Mexico, which supplies Coast Citrus Distributors, according to the announcmeent. The jalapeños in turn were used in several products sold by Taylor Farms. The recalled jalapeños were also distributed to Mexican food chains Qdoba and Chipotle.

Other products impacted in the recall were sold at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Walmart, Hannaford and Kroger, and many were sold under private store brands, including Kroger’s Private Selection. The full list of impacted items, including the states in which they have been recalled, can be found on the FDA’s official website.

“Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the release explains.

Healthy people typically experience “fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.”

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis,” per the agency.

“Taylor Fresh Foods is no longer sourcing products from this farmer and will be filling orders from alternative suppliers,” the FDA’s press release read.

The salmonella outbreak stemming from Taylor Farms’ products comes on the heels of a major Cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce distributed by the company. The parasite infects the small intestine, causing cyclosporiasis, which is marked by “watery diarrhea” and “frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements,” the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said. Most people recover without treatment.

In July, the FDA identified lettuce distributed by Taylor Farms as the source of the outbreak. Taylor Farms announced a voluntary recall on all lettuce supplied from central Mexico on July 17.

In an Aug. 5 update, the FDA said the total case count from the outbreak is 6,358 illnesses reported from 15 states.

The sources “spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details of the ongoing investigation,” according to the Post.

Taylor Farms has 20,000 employees and, according to its website, is “the leading global producer of salads and healthy fresh foods, with production facilities across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Western Europe.”
