Gavin Rossdale is mourning the loss of his beloved mother, Barbara Stephan.
The Bush rocker, 59, announced on Instagram that he’d lost his “mama” on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Rossdale did not reveal Barbara’s cause of death, but said she died “after a long torturous fight.”
“It’s hard to put into words the bond we had and the void she leaves,” he wrote on Friday, Jan. 31. “The world feels lonelier and today the journey seems longer and more uphill. i know she is with me at all times because that is the way with love and loss. we carry those who we love yet cannot see. that is my comfort. I send you all my love 🖤”
The “Glycerine” singer also shared a series of photos of his mom, including her smiling in a pink dress, selfies with her rocker son and a photo together with Rossdale holding up his Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy, which he received in 2013.
One of the photos was a picture Rossdale had previously shared in March 2020, saying at the time he’d taken his mom to a “beautiful birthday lunch” alongside his sisters, stepsister, nieces and Barbara’s best friend in honor of International Women’s Day.
“No matter the weather love them always. Inspired by each of them,” he wrote. “I wish I was around everyone more. It was a magical day.”
Bush was scheduled to perform at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nev. on Saturday, Feb. 1, but announced the show had been canceled “due to a family emergency.” The rockers are set to embark on a North American tour this spring starting in April. Rossdale is also set to premiere his new show Dinner with Gavin Rossdale on VIZIO next month.
Barbara and Rossdale’s father Douglas divorced when the star was 11 years old. Douglas died in June 2018 at age 93, according to an online obituary.
In April 2020, Rossdale — who is a father himself to sons Kingston, 18, Zuma, 16, and Apollo, 10, with ex-wife Gwen Stefani and daughter Daisy Lowe, 35 — remembered his dad on social media as he celebrated what would have been his father’s birthday.
“Miss him more as time goes on,” he captioned his post. “All of us hurtling through life as we do. I want more time back with him. More time back with you. More time to get it right.”
