While a flying air taxi may have once been a concept of the future, one California-based transportation company is making it a reality.
One of Joby Aviation’s futuristic flying taxis officially completed a series of demonstration flights across the San Francisco Bay Area this week, the company announced in a press release on Friday, March 13. The company conducted the test flights to show that their air taxis, which are “all-electric, vertical take-off and landing aircrafts,” are “nearing readiness” for commercial passenger use.
The spectacle drew a crowd of reporters and tech enthusiasts who marveled at the aircraft in the sky from the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco on Thursday, March 12, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Joby Aviation chose the San Francisco Bay Area to showcase the taxis’ “operational readiness" as the region is "defined by traffic congestion, demonstrating that the future of quiet, emissions-free flight, is not just a concept, but nearing commercial readiness,” per the release.

According to the release, the company has conducted thousands of test flights and more than 50,000 miles logged across its fleet, making it ready to “scale its presence across the U.S.”
Joby Aviation’s selection as a partner under the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) has given them the “opportunity to begin early operations across 10 states,” including Arizona, Florida, Idaho, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Utah, per the release.
The San Francisco flight kicked off Joby’s 2026 Electric Skies Tour timed to the United States’ 250th anniversary, during which the company will set out to fly and present the aircraft in various cities across the country.
Piloted by Andrea Pingitore, the N545JX aircraft departed from Oakland International Airport and “soared quietly” toward the Golden Gate Bridge before it turned above the Marin Headlands, according to the release.
The flight is a step in the right direction for the company’s “journey” of introducing Americans to “a future where a daily commute will take minutes, not hours,” the release states.

JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby, said, “The Bay Area is home to the world’s most innovative companies, including Joby, but it’s also an area with significant traffic and unique geographical barriers.”

He adds that the company’s technology serves as an opportunity to build on the “immense potential of this region” in California, while also protecting it for the next generation with its “clean and quiet service.
The company also notes it’s making progress towards certification with federal regulators, which it needs before it can launch commercial passenger service. Per the release, it achieved a successful flight of its first FAA-conforming aircraft for type inspection authorization (TIA).
