A driver was "distracted" with his phone while on the road in Carrollton, Ga., and suddenly became pinned beneath a semi-truck, local police said.
"Georgia Hands-Free Law . THIS is why we enforce it!" the Carrollton Police Department said in a social media post Thursday, Feb. 26. "Many of you saw our traffic notice this morning or actually happened to be stuck in traffic due to this crash. Here are the photos."
The CPD's post included a series of photos of a gray sedan crushed underneath a semi-truck, including a shattered windshield and smashed hood.
"The cause? The driver admitted he was distracted with his phone and ran underneath the 18-wheeler," police continued. "Miraculously, the driver wasn’t more seriously injured and we are SO grateful — because crashes like this often end much differently."
Police added that crashes of this nature are "not minor" or "harmless" and cautioned against distracted drivers putting "lives at risk."
"A quick glance at a phone can be catastrophic. This is why Georgia has a hands-free law. This is why citations happen. Not for revenue. Not for fun. For safety — yours and everyone else’s. So here’s the simple ask: Use hands-free features. No notification is worth this. Stay safe, Carrollton!" the post concluded.
