Did a SpaceX Rocket Hit the Moon? Crash Details

It reads like a sci-fi plot, but it played out in the pre-dawn dark of Wednesday, August 5, 2026. A discarded piece of a SpaceX rocket, adrift for nearly 19 months, was calculated to hit the moon at thousands of miles per hour. The hardware traces back to a Falcon 9 launch by the company Elon Musk founded, and its unplanned date with the lunar surface had astronomers pointing telescopes at the same spot.

Here’s what we know about the SpaceX rocket’s collision with the moon.

What Happened With SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Rocket?

The story starts on January 15, 2025, when a Falcon 9 lifted off carrying two commercial moon landers, Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost and ispace’s Resilience. Its first stage came back to Earth as usual. The upper stage had no way home, and after nudging the landers toward the moon, it was left tumbling through the Earth-moon system, too high to fall back and too slow to break free.

Astronomer Bill Gray, who tracks high-flying space junk on his Project Pluto site, flagged the looming impact in the spring of 2026 and kept sharpening the math as amateur observers logged the object more than 1,000 times.

Did the SpaceX Rocket Hit the Moon?

Part of the Falcon 9 rocket collided with the Moon on Wednesday, after more than a year drifting in space.

The 4,000kg spacecraft would have hit with the power of three tons of TNT, leaving a new crater. The SpaceX rocket was expected to hit the lunar surface at 5,400mph ⤵️… pic.twitter.com/ienLeI3NKn

By Gray’s latest calculation, the roughly 4-ton stage was due to strike near the moon’s Einstein Crater at about 2:35 a.m. EDT, along the western edge of the near side that faces Earth. It was moving around 5,400 mph, close to seven times the speed of sound, and according to the Associated Press, the crash carried the punch of about 3 tons of TNT.

Catching the moment was never a sure thing, though. The hollow metal stage was moving relatively slowly, so the impact flash was expected to be faint and to last barely a second. Confirming the strike, and finding the new crater, could take telescopes and lunar orbiters days or longer.

Could You See the SpaceX Moon Crash From Earth?

For backyard skywatchers, the honest answer was to keep expectations low. The real prize was the plume. Debris kicked up by the strike could climb for miles and linger for minutes, long enough for a strong telescope or even binoculars to catch it against the black sky past the moon’s bright edge.

Bigger eyes were watching too. The Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter aimed to photograph the stage going in, and NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter planned to survey the site afterward, per CNN. This was not humanity’s first accidental dent in the moon, either. A Chinese rocket segment struck the far side in 2022 and left a double crater that took investigators weeks to find.
