NEED TO KNOW
- Celebrity hairstylist Jermoe Lordet shared his go-to hair growth shampoo that he always recommends to clients — and it’s available at Amazon.
- He broke down what key ingredients promote new hair growth and how to get the most out of a scalp-stimulating shampoo.
You don’t have to invest in bottles of hair growth products to see results: A shampoo for thinning hair can do the work of multiple products, cutting down your routine while promoting a fuller scalp.
It all comes down to the shampoo’s formula. We asked an expert to share his go-to product and what to avoid. “I always recommend shampoos that focus on scalp health first,” says celebrity hairstylist Jerome Lorde whose previous clients include Sandra Bullock, Jessica Simpson, and Jessica Biel. For him, “ingredients matter more than buzzwords,” which is why he says Davines Naturaltech Energizing Shampoo is his first choice for clients — and it’s at Amazon’s beauty department.

When looking for a hair growth shampoo, Lordet says the most important thing it should do is “treat the scalp and strengthen the hair, not just make it look good for the day.” He says this Davines shampoo reinforces weak hair, prevents breakage, and, overall, “reinvigorates the scalp to promote new growth.”
The formula, as he puts it, works to nourish and soften strands, resulting in silky, shinier hair that won’t be weighed down. Bonus: Lordet adds that the “gentle cleansing action gives a sensation of energy and well-being to the scalp.”
What to Avoid
- The biggest mistake Lordet sees clients make is using a volumizing shampoo over a scalp-focused formula. “Volume and growth are not the same thing,” he says. If the shampoo has harsh ingredients, it can actually dry out your scalp and worsen hair thinning.
- The stylist says to avoid anything containing sulfates, heavy silicones, and high-alcohol formulas. “These can irritate the scalp, weigh hair down, and cause buildup that works against healthy growth,” he says.

To properly use a shampoo for thinning hair, you shouldn’t just apply it to your head and wash it out. The hairstylist explains that “how you use it is just as important as what you use.” He suggests incorporating a few quick and easy steps to get the most out of the product. Massaging the product onto your scalp stimulates blood circulation — this can be done with your hands or a waterproof hair scrubber. Also, don’t wash it out straight away; instead, let it sit for a minute, then rinse.
Consistency will be key, Lordet adds, and, for the best results, he suggests pairing it with a strengthening conditioner or scalp treatment.
Key Ingredients to Look for
There are five ingredients that Lordet says “help strengthen the hair”:
- Biotin
- Caffeine
- Niacinamide
- Amino acids
- Keratin
Another important ingredient is green tea extract, which he adds can “counteract” hair thinning.
