An adult daughter revealed she was the only member of her immediate family not invited on a group trip — and now she’s wondering if she’s “overreacting” for feeling hurt.
The woman, 20, turned to Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum on Wednesday, Jan. 1, to detail the situation. She explained that she has three brothers and was under the impression that her parents and just “a couple” of her siblings were going on an upcoming trip together.
However, she discovered this was not the case during a recent family dinner when her third brother mentioned that he was also going.
“My mum immediately hushed him and said he shouldn’t have said anything,” the original poster (OP) wrote, noting that’s when it “hit her” that she was “the only one not invited.”
The Redditor shared she believes her parents “kept it a secret because they wanted me to stay home and look after the dogs while they’re away.”
The woman wrote that she was incredibly hurt by the information, especially because her relationship with her parents has “never been better.” She also shared that she ended up crying during dinner in front of them and other family friends, “which was so embarrassing.”
“I don’t cry easily, I honestly can’t remember the last time I did but this really got to me,” she revealed.

“I felt bad for making things awkward, but I couldn’t help it,” she added. “The rational part of me is telling me I’m being dramatic, but I don’t think I am. I’m not usually sensitive, and things rarely affect me this much.”
The Redditor shared that she ended up leaving that night instead of staying over as originally planned, asking the Reddit community if she is “overreacting here.”
In an update, the woman also said someone else is looking after the pets, adding that she has not since heard from her parents and that she “won’t be reaching out.”

Redditors were quick to chime in, assuring the OP that she has every right to feel hurt over the situation.
“Wow, NTA [not the a——]. Your parents intentionally excluded you from the trip, then conspired with your entire family to keep the fact that you are the only one not invited. That has to hurt,” one commenter wrote. “You are not obligated to be their dog sitter ever again. Decide if you need a break from them and take it if you need it. They owe you an explanation and a huge sincere apology.”
“100% NTA,” said another person. “As a parent, and as a human being who prizes fairness and inclusivity, I cannot, CANNOT comprehend people like OP’s parents who do things like this. OP, you are not being over sensitive, [you] are not crazy.”
“This action on the part of your family is straight up mean,” the Redditor continued. “And your family kept is a secret BECAUSE IT IS SOMETHING THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF and THEY KNOW IT. I am so so sorry. I have no words.”
