A popular refrigerated meal kit sold at Costco stores in more than a dozen stores is being recalled due to concerns of potential salmonella contamination.
The retailer announced on Monday, March 16 that it is recalling its Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze, sold to consumers between March 2 and March 13, due to potential bacterial contamination. The recall comes after the supplier of an ingredient in the meatloaf, Griffith Foods Inc., announced a similar recall, according to the statement released by Costco.
The products are marked as item #30783, and have sell by dates marked between March 5 and Monday, March 16, according to the statement from Costco. The products were sold at Costco locations in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
"Do not consume any product that is part of this recall," the statement from Costco advised. "You can return it to your local Costco for a full refund."
"Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems," the statement continued. "No injuries or illnesses have been reported."
Salmonella is "a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract," as defined by Mayo Clinic. "Salmonella bacteria typically live in animal and human intestines and are shed through stool (feces). Humans become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food."

Some people with salmonella infection have no symptoms, but most people "develop diarrhea, fever and stomach (abdominal) cramps within 8 to 72 hours after exposure," per Mayo Clinic. "Most healthy people recover within a few days to a week without specific treatment."
