Christian Siriano is spilling the behind-the-scenes details on Blue Ivy Carter’s recent red carpet moment.
The fashion designer, 39, spoke about one of his latest creations during a Monday, Jan. 13, appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends. The episode also marked Jenna Bush Hager’s first solo fourth hour on the morning show following her longtime co-anchor Hoda Kotb’s exit.
Actress and advocate Taraji P. Henson joined Hager, serving as the show’s first celebrity cohost. When Henson brought up the stunning gold ball gown he created for 13-year-old Blue Ivy at the Mufasa: The Lion King premiere on Dec. 9, the designer replied, “Yes, we made that in two days.”
He then clarified: “Actually, they’re probably going to kill me. We made it in, like, a day. Because when the team calls, you do it.”
“It’s so beautiful,” Henson replied. “I thought it was age-appropriate. She looked like a princess.”
Hager added: “For anybody that says differently, we say, ‘Bye.’”
“Literally, I was like, what girl doesn’t want to have a princess moment?” Siriano said, referring to backlash from critics saying the ensemble was too mature for the preteen. “And when your parents are Beyoncé and Jay-Z, what are you supposed to wear? You’re not gonna wear a tutu. You’re gonna look like a star.”

The designer also shared that the moment was “a lot of pressure” for Blue Ivy, adding, “She loves a ball gown and wanted to feel like a princess.”
At the Los Angeles movie premiere of Mufasa, Blue Ivy posed with her mom, Beyoncé, who wore a coordinating strapless gown with gold circular plating throughout the design, from the Balmain Lion King collection. They were joined on the carpet by Jay-Z, who wore a suit and tie, and Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, who opted for a black off-the-shoulder top and pants.
Blue Ivy made her feature debut in the film as Kiara, while Beyoncé, 43, reprised her role as Nala.
