Performances for the musical adaptation of Josefina López’s treasured play begins April 1 at the James Earl Jones Theatre in New York City
Real Women Have Curves is being adapted into a new stage musical, and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at a music video for the Broadway show’s opening number, “Make It Work.”
The clip, directed by Brayden Harry / Enter Studios, features show stars Tatianna Córdoba, Florencia Cuenca, Shelby Acosta, Carla Jimenez, Aline Mayagoitia and One Day at a Time alumna Justina Machado.
Like Josefina López’s 1990 play and its hit 2002 America Ferrera-led film of the same name, Real Women Have Curves: The Musical tells the story of Mexican-American teenager Ana Garcia (Córdoba), who — in the summer of 1987 — has her sights set on college away from her home in East Los Angeles. But when her family’s garment business receives a make-or-break order for 200 dresses, Ana is forced to juggle her own ambitions with her mother’s expectations.

“Make It Work” jumps into that conflict from the start, as the community of seamstresses set their determination to fulfill that outstanding order no mater what the odds. Estela (Cuenca), Ana’s older sister and owner of the Garcia Sewing Factory, leads the tune with the duo’s mom Carmen (Machado) joining in the chorus.
Filmed on location at Giliberto Designs Inc., the video features choreography by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo, who directs and choreographs the stage musical.
As for the song itself, it’s penned by Grammy Award-winning artist Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez, both of whom collaborate on the score’s music and lyrics. “Make it work, make it work / There’s not turning back now / make it work, make it work / even if it hurts,” the cast sings in the number. “200 dresses and no second guesses / do what it takes ’cause we make it work.”
