A bride forced her sister to hand over her bridesmaid dress to another woman.
The bride’s sister and maid of honor explained in a post on Reddit’s “Wedding” forum that one bridesmaid “lost her dress” when her mother “accidentally donated” it just two weeks before the wedding. Because the color is no longer available and the dress wouldn’t arrive in enough time if reordered, the bride told her sister to give her dress to the bridesmaid and quickly find a different one for herself.
“She didn’t even give me a choice,” the “upset” maid of honor pointed out.

The bride argues that it would be better for her sister to be the one to wear something different than the other bridesmaids because it’s socially acceptable for her to stand out as maid of honor. Otherwise, she’d ask her other family member to “step down” from her bridesmaid role.
After spending days “panicking” and calling all bridal and formalwear stores in her area with “very little luck,” the Redditor finally found another in-stock dress in a similar color. The bride initially approved of the gown, then suddenly changed her mind.
“She took back her approval and told me I’m going to be wearing a dress that she has, in the same color but different material, regardless if it fits or not,” wrote the maid of honor, who is not the same size as the bride and is half a foot taller than her.
“She essentially told me that I am going to wear the dress even if I don’t feel comfortable or the dress doesn’t fit,” she continued.
The bride’s sister bought high heels that match the original dress, and refuses to buy a new pair. She also noted that she paid for her original bridesmaid dress. Although the bridesmaid who lost her dress offered to pay for the Redditor’s replacement dress and any alterations needed, the poster isn’t sure if she’d get her money back if she wears the used dress.
“Personally I don’t want to wear the dress even if it does fit, and what upsets me the most is that my sister doesn’t seem to understand why I’m upset that I was essentially told that this was happening,” she said.

Some people agree with the bride’s sister that she shouldn’t have to wear something that makes her uncomfortable, but others argue that she should suck it up “because it’s what the bride wants.”
The majority of Reddit users said that this should be the bridesmaid’s problem, not the maid of honor’s, because she’s the one who lost the dress.
“Like how do you LOSE a dress that’s this important? Madness,” an individual wrote. “Punishable by demotion for sure.”
They also advised the bride’s sister to stand her ground, especially because the alternative dress doesn’t fit her properly.
“This should be the answer. You have the dress you planned to wear and no one, not even the bride, your sister, should force you to wear something you won’t be comfortable in. Just say, ‘no,'” another Redditor suggested.
