Poet Billy Collins is showing readers a doggone great time in his latest book.
The former U.S. Poet Laureate has shared the cover of his forthcoming poetry collection, Dog Show, exclusively with PEOPLE. The book will be published this fall from Random House, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
Across 25 poems, Collins captures the multitude of feelings that our canine friends bring us, like happiness and silliness.

The writer is also privy to the “complexities of dog behavior,” per the book’s synopsis, and ponders what the animals can teach us about ourselves.
The 96-page book also features watercolor paintings by artist Pamela Sztybel, and “reveals the profound role dogs play in our lives and the meaning they give us.”

Collins, 84, has written twelve poetry collections, including Questions About Angels, The Art of Drowning and, most recently, Water, Water. He is also the editor of several poetry anthologies, including Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry and Bright Wings: An Illustrated Anthology of Poems About Birds.

The bestselling author served as the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2001-2003 and as New York State Poet from 2004-2006. Formerly a Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York, Collins was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2016.
Dog Show will be published on Nov. 18 and is now available for preorder, wherever books are sold.
