'Avatar: Fire and Ash' ended its theatrical run as the 17th highest-grossing movie of all time globally

NEED TO KNOW

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash will be available for purchase on digital March 31
  • The third movie in James Cameron’s epic science fiction-fantasy franchise is the 17th highest-grossing movie of all time
  • Cameron still has two additional sequels in the works

James Cameron fans will finally be able to own the third installment in the Avatar franchise soon.

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that Avatar: Fire and Ash will be available to own on digital March 31, more than three months after the fantasy and science fiction epic landed in theaters.

Fire and Ash, a sequel to 2022's The Way of Water, crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office in January, just weeks after it initially released. The movie finished its box office run after grossing $1.48 million globally, making it the 17th highest-grossing movie of all time. (2009's original Avatar and The Way of Water stand out as the top grossing movie ever and third highest-grossing film ever, respectively, on that same list.)

Fire and Ash stands out as the longest installment in the Avatar series so far. The film picks up soon after the events of The Way of Water and finds the Sully family reeling after the death of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldaña) eldest son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), as series villain Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) renews his efforts to find and capture Jake. Oona Chaplin also notably joined the franchise for the threequel as a Na'vi villain named Varang, who teams up with Quaritch.

A behind-the-scenes featurette 20th Century Studios shared with PEOPLE also gives viewers a glimpse at Chaplin's experience filming sequences where she flies through the sky in a battle scene for her character. The featurette also includes footage of the actress describing her studies of indigenous communities and incorporating her knowledge into the film's production.

Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Jack Champion, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, Sigourney Weaver, David Thewlis, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Dileep Rao and more star in Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Two additional Avatar movies remain in the works, though Cameron suggested in January that he and the producers behind the franchise "need to figure out how to make Avatar movies more inexpensively in order to continue.” When Cameron appeared for a press conference at the Saturn Awards on March 8, the filmmaker said that it's "likely, but not 100%" that he makes the two planned sequel, according to Screen Rant.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is available on digital March 31, with a physical release set for May 19.
