This holiday streaming entry will surely be a hoot for the whole family.
An Almost Christmas Story, an animated short film written and directed by David Lowery and produced by five-time Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, is inspired by the tiny owl found in the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2020.
In real life, little Rocky was taken to a rehab center to be checked out before being released back into the wild. But in the exclusive trailer below, Moon winds up on a grand adventure through New York City alongside a lost girl named Luna.
The clip begins with Moon in the forest, flying towards a “shiny” city before being attacked by a larger bird. Moon’s father sees the incident — and that Moon’s wing is injured — and says to “stay in the tree” and wait for him to return. But that tree winds up chopped down and headed to the Big Apple.
Over the course of the trailer, Moon and Luna wind their way through the city in an effort to get home to their parents. “For Christmas, whatever that is,” says Moon.
Daytime Emmy-nominated Days of Our Lives actor Cary Christopher provides the voice for Moon, while newcomer Estella Madrigal is Luna, Other voices include Jim Gaffigan, Mamoudou Athie, Alex Ross Perry, Gianna Joseph, Phil Rosenthal, Natasha Lyonne and John C. Reilly as The Folk Singer, who performs four songs throughout the short, two of which are original.
This film is the third and final in Cuarón’s holiday shorts collection; he earned an Oscar nomination in 2022 for the first one, Le Pupille, which was live-action.
Like Moon, the movie has been on a journey of its own, making its way through the film festival circuit, including the Hamptons International Film Festival, Santa Fe International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Morelia International Film Festival, Montclair Film Festival, Animation Is Film, São Paulo International Film Festival, SPARK Animation Festival, World Animation Summit and Bogotá Short Film Festival.
