Harry Shum Jr. found his forever dance partner in his wife, Shelby Rabara.
The pair, who are both actors and dancers, began dating in the early 2000s, per Rabara’s Instagram. Rabara also helped introduce Shum to Glee: After working on the pilot in an uncredited role, she told him the show felt creatively fulfilling — prompting him to audition for, and eventually land, the recurring role of Mike Chang, he told Elle in November 2018.
Shum and Rabara got engaged in October 2013 and married in November 2015. They welcomed their daughter, Xia, a little less than four years later. After a decade of marriage, Shum told PEOPLE in June 2026 that the key to their lasting relationship is “just loving each other in different stages. It takes a different type of love [in each phase].”
Shum joined Grey’s Anatomy as a series regular in 2022, but he hasn’t completely hung up his dancing shoes. He is currently competing on season 35 of Dancing with the Stars, and Rabara was spotted cheering him on from the audience during the Sept. 15 premiere.

She’s an actress and dancer

Rabara, who was born and raised in Orange County, Calif., has appeared in projects including Glee, 17 Again, 2 Broke Girls and Goliath. On Glee, she appeared in the pilot episode in an uncredited role before Shum joined the cast, as he shared on Instagram. Per her IMDb, she made two additional credited appearances on the show as Shoshandra.
She is perhaps best known for voicing Peridot in Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe franchise, and most recently lent her voice to Snappy, a toy camera, in Pixar’s Toy Story 5.
Like Shum, Rabara is an experienced dancer. She was a member of the Laker Girls, the cheerleading squad of the Los Angeles Lakers, before pursuing a career in acting.
Jennifer Hudson was a big part of her first date with Shum
During an appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show in October 2022, Shum revealed that Jennifer Hudson played a big role in his first date with Rabara as they went to see Dreamgirls in theaters together.
“We both cried, and it was just such a beautiful experience because after that we just talked about you,” he recalled. “It really kinda brought us together, and we opened up about a lot of things, and it was just such a beautiful first date.”
They got married in November 2015

The couple tied the knot in Costa Rica on Nov. 21, 2015, per E! News.
Several of Shum’s Glee costars were in attendance, including Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, who played his on-screen love interest.
They have a daughter

Shum and Rabara welcomed their first child, a daughter named Xia, in March 2019.
Since then, the couple has given sweet glimpses of their family of three on social media, including precious snapshots of their little girl on Shum’s shoulders.
She and Shum co-wrote a children’s book

In 2024, the longtime dancers co-wrote their debut children’s book, Martee Dares to Dance. The story follows Martee, a young Filipino boy who loves to dance but becomes reluctant to perform after an embarrassing moment.
“We wrote this book because we wanted to let kids know that it takes courage to dance and to be their true selves,” they told Gold House.
