Bedroom closets can feel incredibly challenging to organize, even after decluttering and donating items you haven’t worn in years. And because our summer-to-fall closet changeovers are only weeks away, we asked an expert for tips on how to make the transition a smooth, organized process.

Heather Aiello is a Certified Professional Organizer who has spent more than seven years teaching her clients how to work smarter, not harder, when it comes to optimizing closet space.

“One of my favorite ways to make a cramped closet feel larger is to think vertically,” says Aiello, who explains that making small changes often make the biggest difference. Following her insights, we’re revamping our closets for fall with nine clever, space-saving accessories from $8.

Meet the Expert

Heather Aiello is the CEO and Founder of The Organized You and President of the National Association of Productivity & Organization Professionals, New England Chapter. Aiello specializes in creating practical systems that keep her clients’ homes both tidy and functional.

Over-the-door organizers let you “take advantage of every inch without making the closet feel crowded,” says Aiello. This convenient option has a whopping 15 compartments and a 44-pound weight capacity — ideal for storing bags, activewear, or small accessories.

Aiello points to under-bed organizers as an ideal way to remove off-season clothing from closets. This lets you focus on what you’re currently wearing, rather than rummaging through your wardrobe on busy mornings. These have wheels to glide under most beds, with wide transparent windows so you can see what’s packed inside.

Practical tweaks to habits you already have are instrumental to maintaining organization long-term, says Aiello. Instead of tossing your dirty laundry onto the floor (or at the bottom of your closet), place one of these hampers in the same spot to corral them. Each basket holds 50 pieces of clothing, plus they’re waterproof to prevent mold accumulation from damp items like towels or swimsuits.

Expert Tip

“The biggest tip I give clients is to create systems that match your real life, not an idealized version of it. The best system is the one you can maintain every day.” — Heather Aiello

It’s easy to lose track of small accessories, so Aiello prefers to organize jewelry inside stackable velvet trays like these. Specialized compartments for rings, statement necklaces, and dainty earrings keep each piece accessible, plus the soft material prevents tangling and damage.

Matching hangers “instantly elevate the closet” with a uniform presentation, says Aiello, who recommends using slim options to optimize space. This set has soft velvet fabric as well as notches to prevent clothing from slipping off. Plus, their curved details protect clothing from warping or stretching.

“Shoes are another area where visibility is key,” says Aiello. She recommends storing them on racks so it’s easy to grab a pair (and then put them away!). Try this best-selling stackable shoe organizer, which has three tiers, holds up to nine pairs of shoes, and fits at the bottom of most closets.

Stackable bins like these are an aesthetically-pleasing way to store less frequently-worn pieces. Rope handles make them easy to pull off upper shelves, and they fold flat when they’re not in use. Aiello also recommends labeling them so you know what’s inside each one at a glance.

If you’re looking for a better way to store belts, Aiello says a hanging organizer is a smart vertical solution. This octopus-inspired gadget has eight hooks and holds up to 24 belts — and at just 6 inches wide, it doesn’t monopolize much closet space. It even spins for easy browsing.

If your scarf collection is in disarray, give it a “designated home,” with this organizer, suggests Aiello. It has 12 hooks to hold chunky scarves and shawls (when folded). You can also use it to store swimsuits, hats, or lightweight purses — whichever makes the most sense for your everyday flow.
