A woman and child are reportedly dead after a boat carrying more than a dozen people capsized in New York.
The vessel overturned off Liberty Island and New York Harbor, where the iconic Statue of Liberty is located, at around 10:27 p.m. local time on Saturday, Aug. 8, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said in a statement to PEOPLE.
The FDNY said it was called about a “reported boat capsized with people in the water.” A dozen people were then rescued from the water, while two others were found in critical condition and sent to the hospital.
“NYPD divers rescued people from water. Two civilian patients in critical condition transported to NYU Langone Health Brooklyn,” said the FDNY. “Twelve civilian patients with minor injuries were transported to area hospitals.”

The two seriously injured people, a woman and a 5-month-old baby, died in the hospital, the New York Post reported. Their identities have not been shared publicly at this time.
The FDNY and New York City Police Department (NYPD), Harbor, Scuba and Aviation units all responded to the scene, according to ABC7 New York.
Photos obtained by the New York Post show some injured people being carried away on stretchers and several others returning to the dock after the incident. Police and emergency response teams are also photographed.
The vessel was a 22-foot bowrider motorboat, according to the New York Post. It is unclear what caused the capsizing at this time.
The U.S. Coast Guard told CNN that investigators will be interviewing the boat’s captain amid their ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
The NYPD and U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
