Police say a 3-month-old baby has died after drowning in a motel bathtub on New Year’s Day.
Authorities were dispatched to the motel in the 6100 block of Airport Hotel Boulevard in Louisville just after 4:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, Jan. 1, following “a report of a drowning,” the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.
Officers with the LMPD’s Seventh Division entered one of the rooms and found the infant who drowned, police said.
They performed CPR and other life saving measures on the baby “until EMS arrived on scene,” but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kiyah Winstead has identified the child as her 3-month-old baby brother Ki’arri, according to CBS affiliate WLKY.
“It’s really devastating because nobody would want anything like this to happen, especially at such a young age,” the 16-year-old sister told Fox affiliate WDRB.
Kiyah has organized the GoFundMe campaign following her brother’s death to help “honor his memory and ensure he has a proper rest.”

The teen said Ki’arri “brought so much joy and light” into people’s lives, “and his absence leaves an unfillable void.”
“This is a pain I could never have prepared for, as he was my first and only sibling,” Kiyah wrote in the fundraiser’s description. “The grief we are experiencing is indescribable, and our hearts are shattered.”
Police said its homicide unit has opened an investigation into Ki’arri’s death.
No charges have been filed, according to WDRB.
