NEED TO KNOW

  • Over 100 cats were removed from a home deemed “unsafe and uninhabitable,” according to a statement from the local Police Department
  • Several deceased animals were found inside the Arvada, Colo. home by investigators
  • The residence has since been condemned, and the owners are facing animal cruelty charges, police said

More than 100 cats have been removed from a home in Arvada, Colo. after authorities said the animals were found living in conditions that were “unsafe and uninhabitable,” according to a statement from the Arvada Police Department.

Investigators began looking into the property, located in the 8300 block of Sheridan Court, after receiving a report of possible animal cruelty. When Animal Management Officers entered the home on March 11, they discovered a large number of cats inside, prompting a multi-agency response.

Over the following days, Animal Management teams, working alongside Crime Scene Investigations and Code Enforcement, carried out an extensive effort to locate and remove the animals. By March 18, officials said 114 cats had been safely rescued and transported to a local animal shelter, where they are now receiving medical care and evaluation.

Authorities also reported that several deceased animals were found inside the home.

The residence has since been condemned, and the owners are facing animal cruelty charges, police said. Mental Health Co-Responders have also been involved in the case, assisting alongside law enforcement.

In its statement, the police department noted that situations like this are often associated with animal hoarding, a condition widely recognized within the mental health field. Such cases can begin with an intent to care for animals but may escalate beyond an individual’s ability to provide safe and adequate conditions.

Officials emphasized the role of community members in bringing the case to light, noting that early reporting can help prevent harm to both animals and people. Recognizing signs of distress or overcrowding, they said, can be critical in addressing these situations before they worsen.

As the rescued cats continue to receive care, authorities are encouraging the public to report concerns about animal welfare to local agencies, underscoring that early intervention can help protect vulnerable animals and connect individuals with needed support.
