A Michigan mother says her 11-year-old son was fatally struck by a car while out buying snacks at a nearby store.
The Taylor Police Department said in a statement that they received an emergency call around 6:37 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Feb. 10, about a child who was hit by a vehicle in the vicinity of Pond Village Drive and Eureka Road.
When they arrived, officers administered life-saving measures, but the 11-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a local hospital.
Authorities said that alcohol and narcotics are not currently suspected as factors in the crash and that the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities.
“The accident remains under investigation," the department said, going on to ask "the community to keep the child's family, loved ones, and the officers who responded to this tragic incident in their thoughts and prayers."
Although police did not disclose the name of the boy, his family identified him as Jacob Robinson, Fox affiliate WJBK reported.
Tonoya Robinson, Jacob’s mother, told the outlet that her son left the house on foot to buy some snacks.
“I talked to him. I said, ‘Jacob, you’ve got to hurry home before it gets dark,” Robnison said. “Next thing I know, I kept calling him and calling him, and I couldn’t get ahold of him.”
Robinson went on to say that she knew something was wrong as soon as heard the ambulance sirens.
Speaking with the outlet, Robinson she said that her son was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.

Jacob was a 6th grade student, according to Ecorse Public Schools, which shared their own statement on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
“It is with regret that I have to share with you that 6th grader, Jacob Robinson, was involved in a tragic car accident yesterday in Taylor and has passed,” the district wrote. “He also has siblings in other schools within the district. Grief counseling services will be provided to Grandport staff and students over the next few days. Please keep the student’s family and the Ecorse Public Schools family in your prayers.”
