A 10-month-old baby girl died after her grandmother allegedly forgot to drop her off at daycare and left her in a car in Kentucky.

On Thursday, Aug. 13, the Madisonville Police said that a baby, later identified as Scottie Crowell, died after being left inside a car in the parking lot of Owensboro Health Multicare on South Main Street, according to local outlets WFIE, WEHT and the Kentucky New Era.

Police said Crowell’s grandmother, Stacey Fazenbaker, had picked up the infant from her daughter that morning, as she was supposed to bring her to daycare before going to work as a doctor at the healthcare center, per WEHT. She then allegedly forgot Crowell was in the vehicle and went directly to work around 8 a.m. local time.

Later that day, Crowell’s father went to the daycare to pick up his daughter, after which he discovered she had never been dropped off, police told the outlet. He then called his wife, who contacted her mother.

“She [Fazenbaker] ran outside with some co-workers to get the child,” Major Jason McKnight told WEHT. “But it was far too late by then.”

“Officers arrived on scene, Med Center and the fire department arrived shortly after they did and they found the infant,” McKnight told WFIE. “It’s a front parking lot of Multicare. So the grandmother had already got the child. And so the officers tried some lifesaving measures, but unfortunately it was too late for that.”

McKnight told WFIE that Kentucky Child Protective Services “basically walked hand in hand with our detectives while the investigation was ongoing and [during] the interviews.” CPS will continue to be involved in the ongoing investigation.

“Anybody who loses a child obviously is going to be very upset, and this is no different,” McKnight said. “So yes, the families were all there and more came, after the fact. But yes, for this community, it’s a pretty big deal.”

Police also told the outlet that the grandmother was given a blood test as part of their usual protocol, but they did not believe anything would show up on it.

“She consented to a blood draw, so we have that at the state lab right now,” McKnight said. “We’re waiting for some of those results… We’re not exactly expecting anything with that, but just to make sure, just to clear it off the table.”

“The infant had an autopsy scheduled for this morning, which was completed, but we won’t get the results from that for several weeks,” he added. “We’re getting a little bit more information together before we go straight to the charges that might be appropriate.”

While charges have not yet been made, the case will go to the grand jury once police have completed their investigation.

The Madisonville Police Department and Kentucky Child Protective Services did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
